Ο Stockhausen έγραψε το έργο Refrain για τρεις εκτελεστές το 1959 και το αφιέρωσε στον φίλο του Ernst Brucher. Η πρώτη εκτέλεση δόθηκε στις 2 Οκτωβρίου του 1959 στο Βερολίνο με τον David Tudor, πιάνο και wood-blocks, τον Cornelius Cardew, celesta και antique cymbals και τον Siegfried Rockstroh, vibraphone, cowbells και glockenspiel.
